STAFF DEVELOPMENT

Advanced Assessment.  A four-hour workshop (or separate two-hour workshops) helps reading specialists or special educators, or both, to assess and diagnose reading difficulties. Examples of formal and informal tests, sample profiles, and practice with feedback enable your staff members to build on their knowledge base.

Troubleshooting.  Individuals or small groups of teachers bring case studies or questions about student reading problems to informal sessions with the consultant. Observations of the students can also be arranged. These are generally very open-ended, relaxed meetings, and teachers usually leave feeling more secure in their teaching skills.

Phonological Awareness. Two-hour workshops can be provided for your teachers. These workshops present the concept of phonological awareness and suggestions for how to teach it at various levels of difficulty. Phonological awareness is the understanding that oral language is comprised of individual sounds and the ability to manipulate these sounds in different ways. It  is essential for success in beginning reading. The workshop can be presented with or without follow-up assistance for individuals or small groups.
